EASTER ISLAND
Information
Easter Island located in Polynesia, has been part of the insular territory of Chile since the end of the 19th century. The island is famous for the richness of the Rapa Nui culture that left humanity as a legacy, the gigantic Moais that can be found in different corners of the island and that were carved in rocks of volcanic origin.
What can you do on this great Island? Among the list of activities that you can do is: Visit the Moais of Ahu Akivi, which are seven and are the only ones that look at the ocean on the entire island. These represent the scouts sent by King Hotu Matu'a. In addition, you can visit the place where mysticism began, represented by the Rano Raraku, the place where the moais were built. Here the rocks were removed and then sculpted. As a third activity you can get to know the Puna Pau, which is a small crater from which the pukao, hats or crowns of the moais were extracted and carved.
To get to Easter Island, you have to take a 5:30-hour flight from Santiago de Chile to the Mataveri airport, which began construction in 1965. In later years and thanks to its strategic location and low air traffic, the airport was equipped with advanced implements, since it is used as an alternate landing strip by NASA.
