Nazca lines: the enigma

Peru is full of historical enigmas that enrich our culture. And if we talk about mysteries, one of the tourist attractions that frame secrets yet to be deciphered are the Nasca Lines. These geoglyphs are located in the desert between the cities of Nasca and Palpa, exactly in the Ica region, south of Lima. Why are they so indecipherable? It happens that to date not even the most experienced archaeologists know the reason why they were created or what the Nasca Lines were for. Precisely, the indecipherable nature of this destination makes it one of the main visiting sites for foreign tourists.

The interest in the Nasca Lines arose from the year 1940 with Paul Kosok and Maria Reiche, two international researchers, who decided to publish a photographic body that they had taken thanks to the National Aerographic Service. In this sense, Reiche is considered the first researcher of the Nazca Lines, while Kosok was the one who discovered them. In addition, from 1944 they are recognized by Unesco as a World Heritage Site.

The theories of Nasca

As with other national tourist attractions, various theories about the Nasca Lines are intertwined. Some point out that they functioned as a calendar for the ancient civilization, others pointed out that they were used as race tracks to celebrate the pre-Hispanic Olympics and the theory that the Nasca Lines served as a landing strip for alien ships was even mentioned, due to its complexity of production. And so, with the passage of time, various theories were created that pointed to religious, astronomical, sports events and more. The truth is that to date the Nazca Lines maintain their enigma.

And it is that its imposing forms that seem to have been made with a single stroke are of interest to all those tourists who visit Peru. There are more than 800 impressive figures among which the hummingbird, the pelican, the condor, the monkey, the spider and more stand out. It should be noted that the Nasca Lines are located in an area with a perfect climate -little rain- so they have not suffered alterations or changes by nature.

How to see the Nasca Lines?
